Josh Sollenberger Wins World Junior Championships Gold on 1-Meter

Josh Sollenberger won the gold medal on 1-meter in the 16-18 boys’ age group on Thursday at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro.

It was Sollenberger’s second gold of the championships. He had already won gold in the mixed 3-meter and platform team event earlier in the week. Sollenberger’s gold was the fourth medal won by divers, with Kayla Jensen (14-15) and Lanie Gutch (16-18) both winning silver on 1-meter in girls’ competition.

Sollenberger scored 503.55 points to claim the 1-meter gold, with silver going to Miguel Tovar of Colombia at 494.55. Germany’s Max Otto took bronze at 467.55.

Sollenberger scored more than 60 points on each of his five dives in the final. He was in third place after the first two rounds and took the lead with 72 points on a back 2 ½ tuck round three. He maintained the top spot for the duration of the contest.

USA’s Luke Sitz also advanced to the 1-meter final and finished sixth with 455.85 points. He was in 10th place with one round to go but jumped to sixth in the final standings after finishing his list with 67.50 points on a reverse 1 ½ with 2 ½ twists.

Also on Thursday, Avery Giese and Gianna Kenrick paired up to finish 14th in the girls’ synchronized 3-meter contest. Ukraine won gold (278.58), with Italy taking silver and Germany bronze.

Giese advanced to the individual 16-18 girls’ 3-meter final on Wednesday and finished 12th with 345.45 points. USA’s Taylor Fox also qualified for the 3-meter final and scored 391.90 points for fifth place. China’s Long Yiping (464.90) and Liu Jiadan (406.70) took the top two spots, with Tereza Jelinkova of the Czech Republic winning bronze (397.90).

USA’s Misha Andriyuk and Nathaniel Grannis teamed up for ninth in boys’ synchronized platform. Italy won gold, followed by Mexico and Germany.

The World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships continue through December 1. Friday’s competition features the 14-15 boys on 3-meter and the 16-18 girls on platform.
