U.S. Divers Pick Up Three Top-Six Finishes on Final Day of Junior Worlds
The U.S. wrapped up the 2024 World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. Callie Fox led the team with a fourth-place finish in the 14-15 girls’ platform contest on the final day of competition.
Mik Schwickert was fifth on 1-meter in the boys’ 14-15 age group, with Cristiano Garcia right behind him in sixth.
Fox scored 319.50 points, including 59.40 on an inward 2 ½ tuck, in the platform final. Australia’s Maggie Grey scored 375.70 for the gold. Sophia Narbut also represented the U.S. on platform and finished 18th with 274.15 points.
On 1-meter, Schwickert scored 392.70 points, including 54.60 on a front 2 ½ pike for fifth place. Garcia’s score of 387.50 earned him sixth place, with his best dive coming in the final round when he scored 58.50 points on a forward 1 ½ with two twists. Germany took the top two spots, with Finn Awe scoring 425.55 for gold and Louis Forster taking second at 414.60.
The U.S. won five medals throughout the week, starting off with a gold from Joshua Hedberg, Kayla Jensen, Anna Lemkin and Josh Sollenberger in the mixed 3-meter and platform team event. Sollenberger went on to win an individual 1-meter gold, with Jensen winning a 1-meter silver. Hedberg added a bronze on platform. Lanie Gutch also a won a silver medal on 1-meter.
