Lanie Gutch won a silver medal on 1-meter at the World Junior Championships
The U.S. picked up another silver medal at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro as Lanie Gutch finished second in the 16-18 girls’ 1-meter event on Tuesday.
Gutch’s silver medal comes a day after Kayla Jensen finished second in the 14-15 girls’ 1-meter event. The U.S. also won gold in the mixed 3-meter and platform team event on Sunday.
Gutch finished with 385.30 points to finish second on 1-meter behind China’s Long Yiping, who scored 404.45 points for gold. China also took the bronze as Liu Jiadan finished third at 355.90. Gutch was in second place throughout the entire final, highlighted by 54.60 points on a front 2 ½ pike and 55.20 points on an inward 1 ½ pike.
Avery Giese also advanced to the 16-18 1-meter final and finished ninth with 342.40 points, including 50.70 on a front 2 ½ pike.
In boys’ 14-15 platform competition, Jake Mannarino advanced to the final and finished ninth with 351.95 points, including 56.70 on a front 3 ½ tuck. Ukraine’s Mark Hrytsenko scored 424.35 points to win the gold. Mexico’s Mateo Nolasco took silver at 404.15, and Canada’s Claude-Olivier Lise-Coderre finished third with 402.20 points. Cristiano Garcia also represented the U.S. on platform and placed 14th with 325.75 points in the preliminary.
The World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships continue through December 1. Wednesday’s competition includes Giese and Taylor Fox in the 16-18 girls’ 3-meter event and Misha Andriyuk and Nathaniel Grannis in the boys’ synchronized platform event.
