Joshua Hedberg Wins Platform Bronze at World Junior Championships
Joshua Hedberg won the bronze medal in boys’ 16-18 platform competition Saturday at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
Hedberg’s medal was the fifth won by the U.S. team this week, with one day of competition remaining. Hedberg had previously won gold in the mixed 3-meter and platform team event earlier in the week.
In the individual platform competition, Heberg scored 528.70 to claim the bronze medal. Two of his dives – an armstand back double somersault with 2 ½ twists and a back 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists – each scored 81 points in the final. Italy’s Simone Conte won gold with 547.65 points, and Danylo Avanesov of Ukraine took silver at 531.70. USA’s Misha Andriyuk also advanced to the platform final and finished 10th with 476.90 points.
Also on Saturday, Kayla Jensen qualified for the girls’ 14-15 3-meter final and finished ninth with 335.50 points. Mexico’s Rut Paez took gold at 380.20. Arielle Lobedecis finished 25th with 253.70 in the preliminaries for the U.S.
On Friday, USA’s Cristiano Garcia took fourth with 439.95 points in 14-15 boys’ 3-meter competition. He was just 1.3 points away from bronze medalist Dmytro Stepanov of Ukraine. Germany’s Finn Awe claimed gold with 474.15 points. Mik Schwickert also advanced to the finals for the U.S. and placed seventh with 407.70 points.
In Friday’s 16-18 girls’ platform action, Juliet Radich finished 11th with 338.70 points in the finals. China’s Xu Nan took gold at 465.75. Lilly Rogers also represented the U.S. and just missed a spot in the final with 13th place (335.75) in the preliminaries.
The World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships wrap up Sunday with 14-15 girls’ platform and 14-15 boys’ 1-meter events.
