Anna Kwong, Joshua Hedberg Win Gold on Final Day of 2024 Winter Nationals
BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Joshua Hedberg (Noblesville, Ind./Indiana International School of Diving) won men’s 10-meter and Anna Kwong (Omaha, Neb./TCU) was crowned the women’s 3-meter champion as the USA Diving Winter National Championships wrapped up Sunday.
Hedberg scored 828.05 points on his two lists of dives for the 10-meter gold. Jordan Rzepka (Solon, Ohio/Purdue Diving) scored 791.95 points for silver, edging bronze medalist Andrew Bennett (Madison, Wisc./University of Minnesota) by a tenth of a point.
Hedberg led the entire final and scored no lower than 66 points on any of his six dives. He closed out his list with 81 points on a back 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists to win the winter national title for the second year in a row. He won a bronze medal on platform at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month.
Rzepka was in sixth place with two rounds to go and rallied with 85-plus points on each of his last two dives to pick up the silver medal.
Canadian Mia Vallee scored 576.65 points to finish first in the women's 3-meter contest, while Kwong walked away with the national title as the top-finishing U.S. diver. Kwong scored 575.95 points, with Avery Worobel (Boston, Mass./Purdue Diving) finishing with 567.80 points for silver. Kyndal Knight (Stanley, N.C./Kentucky Diving Club) took the bronze medal with 566.00 points.
Kwong rallied to move ahead in the final round. She was fourth among the U.S. divers heading into the last round. She came through with 69.75 points on a front 3 ½ pike, good for the highest score of any diver in the final. She scored 60 points on two other dives, earning 61.50 points on a back 2 ½ pike and 60 points on a front 2 ½ with one twist.
Kwong and Knight teamed up to win a silver medal in synchronized 3-meter earlier in the week.
