Kayla Jensen Wins Silver on 1-Meter at Junior World Championships
Kayla Jensen won the silver medal in the 14-15 girls’ 1-meter event Monday at the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
Jensen won her second medal of the championships after winning gold in the mixed 3-meter and platform team event on Sunday.
In Monday’s 1-meter final, Jensen scored 321.80 points for silver behind Mexico’s Rut Elisa Paez Manjarrez, who won gold at 338.00. Kseniia Bochek of Ukraine took the bronze with 319.40 points.
Jensen was in fourth place after the first round of the finals but moved into a medal position with 50.70 points on her front 2 ½ pike in the second round. She held on to her second-place spot with 46.00 points on a back 1 ½ pike.
USA’s Ava Jolley also advanced to the 1-meter final and finished 12th with 283.85 points.
Also on Monday, Luke Sitz advanced to the 16-18 boys’ 3-meter final and placed fifth with 502.45 points. China’s Yan Xin was first at 546.60, followed by Norway’s Isak Borslien at 508.35. Malaysia’s Nurqayyum Nazmi Bin Mohamad Nazim came away with bronze with a score of 506.75.
Josh Sollenberger also represented the United States on 3-meter and scored 378.30 points to finish 34th.
The World Junior Diving Championships continue through December 1. Tuesday’s competition features preliminaries and finals for the 14-15 boys on platform and the 16-18 girls on 1-meter.
