Carson Tyler Qualifies for Men's 3-Meter Final at Olympic Games

PARIS – Carson Tyler (Moultrie, Ga./Bloomington, Ind.) punched his ticket into Thursday’s men’s 3-meter final with a seventh-place finish in Wednesday’s semifinal at the Olympic Games. The final is set for 3 p.m. in Paris (9 a.m. ET).

Andrew Capobianco (Holly Springs, N.C./Bloomington, Ind.) placed 15th in the semifinals. In Wednesday’s women’s 3-meter preliminaries, Sarah Bacon (Indianapolis, Ind./Minneapolis, Minn.) placed 19th and Alison Gibson (Austin, Texas) finished 28th.

Tyler qualified for the men’s 3-meter final after scoring 438.00 points in the semifinal. After sitting in 10th place after four rounds, he came through with 78.75 on each of his last two dives – a reverse 3 ½ tuck and a reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists – to move up to the seventh in the standings. The top 12 divers in the semifinal qualified for the final.

Capobianco scored 407.65 points on his semifinal list. He finished strong with 80-plus points on his last two dives – a front 2 ½ with 3 twists and a front 4 ½ tuck – to move up in the standings but it wasn’t quite enough for a spot in the final.

Bacon, who won a silver medal in synchronized 3-meter with Kassidy Cook on the opening day of Olympic diving action, finished her individual event with 264.40 points. She scored 64.50 on her inward 2 ½ pike in the first round and had 58.90 points on a front 3 ½ pike. She finished eight points shy of 18th place and a spot in the semifinal.

Gibson finished with 198.30 points in the women’s preliminary. After her feet hit the board on her first dive, she fought back and did not give up. Her front 3 ½ pike in round three scored 68.20 points, good for the highest scoring dive by any diver in that round. She also added 58.50 points on a reverse 2 ½ pike.
