Tyler, Capobianco Advance to 3-Meter Semifinals at Olympic Games

PARIS – Carson Tyler (Moultrie, Ga./Bloomington, Ind.) and Andrew Capobianco (Holly Springs, N.C./Bloomington, Ind.) both advanced to the men’s 3-meter semifinals after their performances in Tuesday’s preliminaries at the Olympic Games.

Tyler finished 10th and Capobianco placed 15th to advance. The top 18 divers qualified for semifinals, set for Wednesday morning. Tyler scored 389.80 in the prelims, with Capobianco turning in a total of 382.05.

Both divers needed strong dives in the last two rounds to secure their spots in the semifinals, with Tyler in 19th and Capobianco 21st after the fourth of six rounds.

“It was just kind of about fighting on a little bit of an off day. I was able to still claw for every point and try to find my way back up there. Some days you're just a little bit off. I'm excited  for tomorrow,” Capobianco said.

Tyler scored 73.50 points on each of his last two dives – a reverse 3 ½ tuck and a reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists – to jump to 10th in the standings.

Capobianco came through with 76.05 points on a forward 2 ½ somersaults with three twists and closed out his day with 79.80 points on a front 4 ½ tuck.

Diving events at the Olympic Games continue through August 10. Wednesday’s competition begins with the men’s 3-meter semifinals and also features the women’s 3-meter preliminaries. Sarah Bacon and Alison Gibson will represent the U.S. in that event.
