Carson Tyler Finishes Fourth in 3-Meter Final at Olympic Games

PARIS – Carson Tyler (Moultrie, Ga./Bloomington, Ind.) finished fourth in Thursday’s men’s 3-meter final at the Olympic Games.

Tyler scored 429.75 points in the 3-meter final.

China took the top two spots, with Xie Siyi scoring 543.60 points for gold and Wang Zongyuan scoring 530.20 for silver. Mexico’s Osmar Olvera claimed bronze at 500.40.

“I feel good. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but to turn out fourth is definitely a good outcome,” Tyler said.

While he had the lowest degree of difficulty among the 12 divers in the field, the 20-year-old Tyler was consistent in the 3-meter final. He scored no lower than 64.75 points on any dive, and he had three dives score more than 70 points, including a reverse 1 ½ with 3 ½ twists that scored 78.75 points in the last round to move him up from fifth to fourth.

Tyler will dive again in the men’s 10-meter preliminary on Friday morning. He’s the first U.S. diver since Mark Ruiz in 2000 to compete both individual events in the same Olympic Games.

“Going from springboard to platform is less hard than going from platform to springboard. I think it's easier on my lower body and my legs," Tyler said. "So going into tomorrow, I feel good physically. I've had some practice with this environment, and I'm feeling good.”

The men’s 10-meter preliminary is set for 10 a.m. (4 a.m. ET) Friday in Paris, with semifinals and finals taking place on Saturday. Brandon Loschiavo (Huntington Beach, Calif./West Lafayette, Ind.) will also dive in the 10-meter event for Team USA.
