PARIS – Delaney Schnell (Tucson, Arizona) finished 15th in the women’s 10-meter semifinals and Daryn Wright (Plainfield, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.) was 19th in the preliminaries as individual diving events got underway Monday at the Olympic Games.

Schnell scored 271.95 points in the semifinals, highlighted by 70.40 points on a back 2 ½ somersaults with 1 ½ twists in the opening round.

Schnell overcame a rough start in the prelims to finish 17th with 278.15 points, enough to put her into the 18-diver semifinal. In 25th place after three rounds in prelims, she moved up to 19th after scoring 67.50 points on a front 3 ½ pike in round four and secured her spot in the semifinals with 62.40 points on her final dive, an inward 3 ½ tuck.

Wright just missed the cut to advance out of the prelims, scoring 272.25 points for 19th place and one spot shy of qualifying for the semifinals. In 15th after round three, she fell to 22nd after a miss on her back 3 ½ tuck in the fourth round. She finished with 62.40 points on a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists to move up to 19th, just 4.75 points out of qualifying.

“I just had fun up there. I mean, it was nerve-wracking on the first day, but then once the nerves were over, it's like, okay, you're just settled into your normal groove. I just tried to have fun,” Wright said. “I've competed against these girls a bunch of times. So it's nothing new to me. So really it was just settling in and saying, you’ve done this before.”

Diving at the Olympic Games continues through August 10. Tuesday’s action kicks off with USA’s Andrew Capobianco (Holly Springs, N.C./Bloomington, Ind.) and Carson Tyler (Moultrie, Ga./Bloomington, Ind.) in the men’s 3-meter preliminaries.
